The Pitfalls of Fully Automated Event Coverage

April 6, 2026

Automated event insurance checkouts are convenient. For straightforward, low-risk events they work well. For everything else, they create a surprising amount of risk by binding coverage that does not actually fit the event.

This post outlines the most common pitfalls, and how a hybrid approach (modern online quote, human underwriting review when needed) tends to produce better outcomes.

Why automated checkouts feel attractive

They are fast. They feel simple. They produce a certificate immediately, which is what the venue is asking for.

For a 50-person corporate luncheon with no alcohol, that simplicity is genuinely useful.

Where automated checkouts tend to fail

Event details get auto-classified into the wrong category. A wedding with a band gets treated as a music festival, or vice versa.

Higher-risk elements (fireworks, inflatables, mechanical rides, amplified sound) are not flagged, so the policy is bound on a form that excludes them.

Required endorsements are missed. The venue asks for a Waiver of Subrogation and the auto-issued certificate does not include one.

Limits are wrong. The venue requires $2M aggregate and the auto-issued policy is $1M aggregate.

Vendor questions are conflated with host questions. The buyer thinks they are covering their vendors and they are not.

The binding trap

Once a policy is bound, changing it after the fact can be slow and sometimes impossible. The cheapest, fastest option at midnight can become the most expensive problem at load-in.

The hybrid model

A better approach is a modern online quote flow paired with human underwriting review for anything non-standard. Sofi, the AI assistant on this site, can answer questions about coverage and help frame the application, but does not bind policies. A licensed agent reviews and binds when appropriate.

If coverage requirements cannot be met, we'll work to correct the issue or provide a full refund.

What to ask before binding any policy

Does this policy include host liquor coverage for non-commercial alcohol service?

Does it cover setup and teardown days?

What endorsements are included by default, and which need to be added?

What activities are excluded?

If the venue rejects the certificate, what is the process for fixing it?
