Top 5 Reasons You Need Event Insurance
April 7, 2026
If you are planning an event, here are the five reasons event insurance is worth the line item, even when it is not strictly required.
1. Most venues require it
Public venues, parks, hotels, country clubs, and city facilities commonly require a Certificate of Insurance before you can load in. Common minimums are $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate, with the venue listed as Additional Insured.
Without it, you may lose the deposit and the date.
2. Guest injury is the most common claim
Slip and falls, trips, and minor injuries are the most common third-party claims at events. A Special Event Liability policy is designed to respond to these.
Without coverage, the host is exposed personally.
3. Property damage to the venue happens more often than expected
Broken fixtures, damaged floors, spilled wine on a historic carpet. Venues frequently bill these back to the host after the event.
Event GL responds to third-party property damage, including damage to the rented venue under certain forms.
4. Vendors and alcohol add real exposure
Many special event liability policies include host liquor coverage for non-commercial alcohol service. Commercial alcohol sales or service typically require separate liquor liability coverage.
Vendors at multi-vendor events should carry their own coverage, often through a program like the Vendor Liability Program.
5. Cancellation protection saves the budget
When deposits are non-refundable and a covered disruption forces cancellation or postponement, Event Cancellation coverage can protect the budget. Coverage is subject to carrier-specific terms, exclusions, and lead time requirements.
